A family can talk with a funeral director about the layout of the visitation and service. Furniture can always be rearranged.
The layout, I think you are describing, comes from the “Chapel” concept for a service. Since years ago the funerals were held at a church the seating design was reflective of that tradition.
There are no formal rules at most event locations. So when you are involved down the road let your family know they can loosen things up. I think you’ll find the director more than willing to work with you.
